Internship Application Letter

To be more precise, it’s my internship application letter which I sent to my current company one year ago, exactly this date.

After reading a piece of information of an upcoming event for the youth, I traced back to the company hold it and was stunt by how suitable this company was for me, on my way to pursuit my career goals.  So I immediately spent times to read everything I can about it (goals, vision, career, services, etc) and typed an application letter, then sent it to the person who was in charge of HR that time. It took me an hour to have this letter:

Dear Ms. Trà Mi

I know that the deadline for your company’s Internship application process had passed. However, as a big fan of his two books “How to Win Friends and Influence People” and “How To Stop Worrying and Start Living”, I feel the urge to apply to your company, right after I know the existence of Dale Carnegie organization in Vietnam.
Currently, I’m at my final year of College, in the Advance Program in Computer Science, at University of Science, Ho Chi Minh city. So I cannot work as a full-time employee. However, I can assure you that I can manage to finish all the given tasks during my free time, on time.
I’m an active and quick-learning student. I’ve got some achievements, which are stated on my online resume (I embedded the link here). I used to be a Microsoft Student Partner, a leader of a charity group, core volunteer of EarthHour 2010 campaign in Vietnam and for now, I’m one of the organizers of Saigon English Community. So I have skills and experiences in management and event holding, which I think are suitable for your company.
I have developing a strong network with talent and active friends from many areas. Besides, I’m very fond of Social Marketing and have been applying the those knowledge rather  successfully for the EarthHour campaign (http://www.facebook.com/EarthHourVietnam, which has more than 4500 fans) and Saigon English Community (http://www.facebook.com/SaigonEnglishCommunity). I think one of your main targets is young and potential students; and I can help your company approach that area faster.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I’m looking forward to speak with you about this employment opportunity.”

Looking back after one year, there are a couple of things that I had done right:

  • Typed the letter in English to show that I can use it to communicate well
  • Keep the letter short and to the point
  • Briefly introduce who I was, what I can offer the company (with number and evidences) and some of my working condition

And this letter got me an interview, which lead to a self-introduction presentation and a talk with the CEO before joining DCVN as an intern. I had shared this experience to some of my friends and most of them successfully passed the first step of the career seeking process. Every application letter is different from each other, yet they share one thing in common: tell the recruiter what we have to contribute to their success, not just what we want from them. And that’s also the main point in my talks with whoever I’m doing business with.

So next time, whenever you are sending an application letter, interviewing for a job, promoting a new product, etc, put yourself in their shoes and see what can they benefit from taking your proposition, and you’ll have a better chance to win and go on to the next steps.

Stupid vs Smart; Good vs Bad

Last week, at Works Work, I had heard an interesting discussion on the topic (the post title). It captured me! And the thought of it keeps lingering in my head, so I am writing this post to make some place in my poor crammed brain.

When I first heard those words, the first question that popped out was: “To whom?”. The answer is “To the person who is using them”. Sometimes, we use those to address ourselves, yet, most of the times, others address us. And since each person’s perspective is different, the ways we choose among those adjectives are different.

But, there exists  a common criteria to mankind. Let’s consider the second pair- “Bad” is when we do something affects others around us in a negative way and “Good” is in a positive way. The word “us” represents a group of people around each person or even bigger, our society. And for long, our society has implicitly or explicitly defined a long list of “good” or “bad” things. For example: Robbery is bad; giving money to charity is good; killing is bad; taking care of the old ones is good, etc. “Good” or “bad” depends on how the people around you or your society judges you, based on their benefit. If you are living in another society, within a different environment, the criteria is different. I once read a very fascinating novel called Dune. It is a place where water is very scarce. So when one dies, others put him/her through a machine to take as much water out of his/her body as possible. When people come from our society lives there, witness the act, they call the people who did it “Terrible” or “Bad” (of course they do, just imagine the fruit juice extractor). They judge others based on their criteria. But people who belong to that place don’t think so, it is a common thing to do. And it is one last “good” deed that the dead person can do to the people he/she loves. In general, there is no such thing as a universal “Good” or “Bad” thing, it depends on each person and moreover, on the society he/she is living.

Likewise, there is also no such thing as a universal “Stupid” or “Smart” thing to do. It all depends on how the person who uses those word, whether he/she thinks your act is more prone to failure or success.

Now that I have just typed all the things that I have been keeping in mind for about a week or so. And I am not going to reread it though it may contains lots of typos or wrong uses of words. Stupid or smart; good or bad – Your call!

Nice weekend!

E-Marketing Vacancies

The first one is for branding agency BrandBox. Salary isn’t high at the moment but the good news is you don’t need to be an expert in E-marketing to apply for the position. The second one is for an English School. Just like the first one, this doesn’t require experience (the owner prefers young people, indeed). Go fast and go far

“If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” Said Wareen Buffett.

And it’s completely true! It’s just that I (and maybe, you) want to go far as fast as possible! How? The answer is easy: “Go with partners, who are as good as you are, as one team!”

The not-so-easy answers are how to find good partners and how to work with them as one team!

Disappointed!

And angry, too! That’s how I felt when a heard a leader of one rather famous community talked about its members. “Not-too-talented” and “Not-so-strong-minded” (I translated his words into English, and the original words were more serious to me) are definitely not the way you should address your dear members.

Many students think very highly of him. They totally respect him and want to learn from him. I don’t think this is the person one should learn from. Put aside the question on his abilities, this guy doesn’t deserve to lead a community that aims to foster Vietnamese youth’s dream.

Respect your community members!

Áo Khoác + Suy Ngẫm

images

You do the math!

Wired In

trippy clock

That’s the term they used in the movie The Social Network. And it carries the same meaning of “being in the Flow State”. Basically, the terms describe the state when one is hyper-concentrating on something; the surrounding environment doesn’t affect him anymore; time seems to be moving slower and he is just (like the term says) flowing. He who is in flow state feels very peaceful and is able to think everything through easily. His performance improves tremendously. And after his work, he feels very satisfied and will be very surprised to know that it’s been hours since he started, yet he doesn’t feel tired at all.

Besides the fact that it’s very hard to get out of the state (seriously, who wants that unless he is sitting in a house on fire), I haven’t found any disadvantage of “the flow”.

I’m very interested in this state because I (just like everybody else) noticed it since I was very young (remember those times when you had the essay exams?) and I knew this would help me reach my goals ways faster. So I read more about it, tried to make it easier to get into the state every time I need. To be frank, it’s not something that I can get easily. Below are some conditions for me to be wired in:

  • Right challenge – If the task is too hard, I probably don’t feel comfortable doing it; if it is too easy, I won’t take it serious enough to be fully concentrated.
  • Right level of stress – I always think that stress would boost my performance, until it break me down. A stress-free job won’t motivate me and too much stress is always bad for business. Furthermore, challenge and stress are paired – right challenge, right level of stress!
  • Right environment – It doesn’t need to be completely silent but I ought to make sure I won’t be disturbed at the beginning.
  • Right music – Music also help reduce the noise and help me focus on the task. After a while, I won’t hear it anymore. But, when started, I choose the song that doesn’t make me think.
  • Right tool – this is optional. But from my experience, tools like mindmap can help me open my faucet of idea. Since the creative source is limitless in this state, why not make it flow stronger?
  • Another condition is to do one thing at a time. I tried to do several tasks at once and my state broke during the transitions.

That’s it for me to get in the state alone. I haven’t fully discover the requirements for the whole group to be wired in together. Sometimes my groups get lucky and we deliver better products ways sooner. I haven’t knew exactly what make us so connected and flow together to the common goals. I’m still working on that, but if you know the secret recipe, please let me know.

Spread It Out

3684474555_86c417c8d8

Four years ago, I collected enough money (from my saving and my family) to buy my first ever laptop. I didn’t know much about laptop, so I asked my boss, whom I thought to be the most trusted person I knew on this matter, to help me out. And although he was very busy, he accepted to spend the whole evening, choosing my laptop and sharing his experience on using it with me. That time, I felt very grateful when somebody sent me aid when I was in need. And that’s the reason why I instantly accepted to help a friend of mine (who is younger than me) to go with him to the supermarket to buy his first ever laptop, today. Everything feels like the same to me, except for the fact that now I’m the one with more experience and very eager o share it, and I understand the feeling of having someone whom you can trust spending time to give you a hand. I was very happy 4 years ago, and now, I’m over the moon to think that I’ve repeated a very meaningful act. I told him the story, expecting him not to remember me, but to do the same as I did– give others a hand when they need it. And the person he helps will keep things running that way, spreading our small but meaningful acts out, just like a virus, to make it a better community.

There is an old TV commercial that conveys the same message:

Here is one more thing: when you need help, ask for it! Because you may actually bring happiness for others by giving them a chance to do good things. And if you get rejected, so what? At least, you know for sure that you didn’t let go of a chance.
